Ingredients

  • 3 cups fruit juice (e.g., cranberry or pomegranate) for flavor and color
  • 3 tablespoons granulated gelatin unflavored or flavored with fruit essence
  • 0.5 cup cold water for blooming gelatin
  • 0.5 cup hot water to dissolve gelatin
  • 0.25 cup vanilla extract optional for added aroma
  • food coloring red and pink gel food coloring to achieve the eerie hue

Equipment

  • Brain-shaped silicone mold
  • Saucepan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Small ladle or pouring cup

Method

  1. Begin by pouring cold water into a small bowl and sprinkling the gelatin over the surface. Let it sit for 5 minutes to bloom, until it looks spongy.
  2. Meanwhile, heat the hot water in a saucepan until just bubbling. Remove from heat and whisk in the bloomed gelatin until completely dissolved and smooth.
  3. Add the fruit juice to the dissolved gelatin mixture, stirring well to combine. Incorporate the vanilla extract and mix thoroughly.
  4. Divide the mixture into separate bowls if you plan to create layered effects, and add a few drops of food coloring to each, creating shades of red and pink. Stir gently to evenly distribute the color.
  5. Pour the first colored layer into the silicone brain mold, filling it about halfway. Place the mold in the fridge to set for about 15 minutes until just firm but still slightly jiggles.
  6. Remove the mold from the fridge and carefully pour the next layer of gelatin over the first, being gentle to prevent disturbing the layer underneath. Return to the fridge and chill for another 15 minutes.
  7. Repeat layering with different shades if desired, ensuring each layer is set before adding the next. This builds the realistic, layered brain effect and gives the gelatin a slimy appearance.
  8. Once all layers are set and firm, gently unmold the gelatin by flexing the silicone mold to loosen the edges. Carefully invert it onto a serving platter, revealing the eerie brain shape.
  9. Trim any excess edges if necessary and admire the slimy, textured appearance of your spooky brain gelatin. It's now ready to serve as a creepy Halloween centerpiece or fun party treat.

Notes

For added realism, lightly score the surface with a toothpick to create vein-like lines before unmolding.
